How BYW works

The group chat's watchlist, sorted.

Tell us what you just watched and get five films or series that share its DNA. Send them to the group chat in one tap, score what you've seen together, and let your crew's Group Score settle every “is it actually any good?”

Type what you watched

Start typing and we'll recognise the title before you finish. Press Tab to accept the suggestion, or pick from the list.

  • Nicknames work: “got”, “b99”, “lotr”.
  • Typos are fine. We'll take a good guess and tell you what we guessed.
  • No title in mind? Type a mood like “heist” or “anime”.
As you type
got becomes Game of Thrones
interstel becomes Interstellar
heist gives five heist picks

Get five picks, ranked

Every title is tagged with the things that make it what it is: its themes, its genres and its era. We compare those tags with everything else and rank the closest five.

  • Shared themes count most, like a slow burn, a con artist or a desert setting.
  • Shared genres come next.
  • A small boost goes to the same format (film or series) and to titles from a similar era.

Each pick shows its match score and what it has in common with yours. Filter to films or series, or tap any poster to start again from that title.

Send them on WhatsApp

One tap opens WhatsApp with the message already written. Send all five, or one title straight to the friend who needs to see it.

  • The message lists every title and year, so it's useful even if nobody clicks the link.
  • The link opens Because You Watched on that exact title.
  • Not on WhatsApp? Copy the message and paste it anywhere.

Start a group for every crew

A watch group is a shared place for your group's recommendations, so the good ones don't get lost in the chat. Make one for work friends, one for family, one for you and your partner, one for the five-a-side lot.

  • Invite with a code. Every group gets a code like KX7-4PQ and a link. Share it on WhatsApp or iMessage and friends join in one tap.
  • Recommend from any poster to one group or several at once.
  • Open a friend's profile to see what they've watched and five picks made from their history, ready to send them.

Give anything you've watched a score out of 10. Your group's average becomes its Group Score, out of 100, shown on every poster your group has scored.

  • The Friends Score It tab ranks everything your group has scored, with each friend's score beside it.
  • Critics and strangers don't count. It's only the people whose taste you know.
  • Scoring something also adds it to your profile as watched.

Questions

Good to know

Do I need an account?

No. Searching, getting picks and sharing on WhatsApp all work without one. You only sign in to join a watch group, so your friends know who's recommending what.

Where do the picks come from?

From the tags on each title: its themes, genres, format and era. There are no ads or sponsored picks, and nobody pays to rank higher.

What does the match score mean?

How much a pick has in common with the title you typed. Shared themes count most, then genres, then format and era. A higher score means closer DNA. It doesn't measure quality.

What can my group see about me?

Your name and photo, the titles you've marked as watched, the scores you've given, and what you've recommended to the group. Nothing else, and only people in your group.

How is the Group Score worked out?

It's the average of everyone's scores out of 10, shown out of 100. Three friends scoring 10, 9 and 9 gives 93. Change or remove your score at any time by tapping it again.

My title isn't showing up.

Check the spelling or try the original title. The catalog is still growing, so some titles aren't in it yet. You can type a mood like “heist” or “feel-good” in the meantime.

Can I remove something I recommended?

Yes. Your own recommendations have a Remove button in the group feed, and you can untick “I watched this” on any title.
